Stress and Pets - Stress and Pets - A Great Stress Relief Method


As with bringing up kids, managing pets can be stressful. But over and over again, the circumstance is really just the opposite: having pets often provides one of the greatest stress relief techniques known.

A number of reports propose that having a pet helps recovering surgery patients heal sooner. If the connection between illness and stress is right, this shouldn't be unexpected. The positive effect on the immune system could give an explanation for that.

For many, having pets has plenty of psychological benefits as well. Cats for example are clearly unaware of any troubles a person may have. They want their dinner and their rub while seating in an affectionate, motionless lap. The transfer of concentration from the patient to the pets (and gone from the horrible event at the workplace) is what helps reduce stress.

The sympathetic nervous system operates in combination with other brain regions to produce hormones and warning signs that make our 'fight or flight' apparatus. Moving concentration away sets off the parasympathetic nervous system that has reverse effects. In brief, we relax. That interval helps the body attain homeostasis - the shift back to balance from a fanatical state.

Stress and PetsDogs are excellent stress relievers when they aren't making more. Hollowing out chasms in the garden, tarnishing a nice pair of shoes or making a disaster on the rug really don't help ease stress. But a small game of fetch with a tennis ball can. Watching their enthusiastic delight in plain activities is a clear reminder that not everything in life is an instance for tragedy and gloominess.

Dogs have been tamed to live with people for over 10,000 years. Throughout that time, they have taken part in a hundred everyday human services and tasks, some of which can offer reprieve from stress signs. Fishing, mountaineering and other behaviors are in themselves stress relievers. When supplemented by a cherished and affectionate dog, the effect is augmented.

Even aquatic fish can offer a source of stress relief. Taking care of tropical fish needs a lot of watchful preparation and implementation. That concentration helps keep one's mind off what often amounts to petty troubles. Other rewards can become evident by watching the many remarkable behaviors of ocean animals on display.

An assortment of pets - tropical flora and fauna, hamsters, ferrets and many more - often show behaviors that individuals find amusing. And even the sternest psychotherapist will concur that laughter is exceptional treatment when it comes to reducing stress.

Though the appearance of interaction between nature and people is very different from that between one person and another, there is an irrefutable awareness that develops between individuals and their non-human friends. That connection is often stronger than between informal friends. The effect is a feeling of collaboration without anticipation of anything other than a nice stroke of the fur.

After all, when was the last time you ever heard anyone say: “my dog drove me to drink”?
