Sleep disorder, or more commonly known as insomnia is the inability of a person to get good quality uninterrupted sleep.
How do you know whether you are suffering from sleep disorder? Well, the signs to look out for are:
* Difficulty falling asleep
* Waking up many times through the night and unable to fall back into sleep
* Tendency to wake up feeling drained and tired
Insomnia is not to be taken lightly. If you have suffered the mentioned signs, you should know that in the long term, its negative effect on your quality of life does show. Sleep disorder may cause you to experience tiredness, inability to focus ore concentrate and a short temper ready to go off.
Sleep disorder itself is classified into 3 categories, short term (last from 1 night to a week), long term (last more than a month) and irregular (last from time to time).
What causes Insomnia?
You are at higher risk if you are over 60 years of age, a female and have a history of depression.
This is not inclusive of external conditions that will also affect your ability to sleep well. External conditions include: stress, anxiety, medical problems, certain medications.
Your behavior and what you eat is also important if you want to avoid sleep disorder. This may be the single most overlooked factor in trying to identify the source of your insomnia. Ask yourself the following questions.
* Do you worry about not being able to fall asleep, and that has been keeping you awake?
* Do you drink too much caffeine, especially before bedtime?
* Do you drink alcohol or have a beer before bedtime?
* Do you have a last stick of cigarette before retiring to bed?
* Have you slept too much during the day?
If you have answered yes to any of the above, try to cut down or eliminate it from your lifestyle and you could find that your Insomnia may be gone in a flash.
Treatment for Sleep disorder
Treating short term and irregular insomnia is normally not required as these conditions are normally short term and often due the factors mentioned, including, stress, what you eat before bed and your behavior. If you learn to first identify the cause, you can make changes and then let your body learn to revert back to the natural sleep state.
For long term chronic cases, medical advice should be sought. The process normally starts with treating underlying medical or psychological problems, identify and correcting behaviors that are contributing to the problem, or using medication such as sleeping pills to assist in reducing the problem. You must be aware that long term usage of any medication is not advised, especially sleeping pills. Therefore, you must be under the strict supervision of a qualified medical personnel when taking any prescriptive drugs.
