Stress symptoms -
Discover why after billions of years of evolution, we are still very much behaving like cavemen!
Watch how the stress symptoms kick in as you imagine the following scenario.
You are running late for work.
As you anxiously try to speed up your journey, weaving in and out of peak hour morning traffic, at the same time imagining the lecture you are going to get from your boss.
A car suddenly cuts into your path, almost causing a collision as you jammed on your brakes, you can feel your face flushing with blood, and the pressure rising from the pit of your stomach. "Damn you! Son of a b****" as you found yourself cursing at the top of your voice.
You started to flash your headlights at the car, and as he changes lane and pulls off, you floored the accelerator and followed suit, still cursing under your breath...
That's one all-too-common scenario of stress wouldn't you agree?
The immediate body response to stress - rising blood pressure, tightened muscles and accelerated breathing, or in scientific terms, the "fight or flight" response.
This term basically means that we have this inbuild mechanism that reacts to a stressful situation, where we either 'fight' of 'flight (run)'...I guess this would be helpful for prehistoric hunters, but not modern man.
Other common stress symptoms or signs include:
Teeth clenching,
Hand wringing,
Constant pacing,
Nail biting,
Overeating,
Smoking,
Anger,
Difficulty in concentrating,
Fatique,
Depressed,
Trouble sleeping,
Tension or migraine headache,
Indigestion, heartburn,
Constipation,
Sweaty hands,
Cold hands or feet,
Frequent flu or colds,
Nervousness, and
Phobias
Stress if left unchecked, will lead to long term 'activation' of your stress response and that can manifest itself as various diseases and health problems. Long term stress also weakens your immune system to the point that you cannot fight off infections and are constantly sick as a result.
